A Clinical Study on 96 cases of Rectal Cancer


Abstract
This is a retrospective clinical analysis of 96 cases of the rectal. carcinoma who treated surgically at the Department of Surgery, Chosun University Hospital between January 1979 and December 1988. The results as follows ;
1) There was 46 male patients(47.9%) and 50 female patients (52.1%). The most prevalent group of age was 6th decade.
2) The most common site of rectal cancer was between 6 to 10cm from-anal verge. Its were 43 cases(44.8%).
3)Rectal bleeding was the most common symptom(76.0%), followed by altered bowel habit(71.9%), abdominal pain(39.6%).
4) The distribution according to Duck¢¥s classification was as follows ; A : 3.1%, B : 25.0%, C : 42.7%, D : 29.2%
5) The operation performed included abdominoperineal resection in 46 cases (47.9%), low anterior resection in 18 cases(18.7%).
6) The most common histo-pathologic type of rectal cancer was adenocarcinoma.
7) The most frequent postoperative complication were wound infection(12.5%), anastomotic leakage(6.3%), pelvic abscess(4.2%).
8) Local recurrence rate of curative operation was 15.2% in Mile¢¥s operation and 11.0% in low anterior resection.
9) The most common metastatic site was liver(11.8%) and theraphy method of recurrent rectal cancer was reoperation(21.7%), chemotherapy(73.5%), radiation therapy(21. 5%) etc.
10) The 3-year survival rate following Duke¢¥s classification were Duke¢¥s A : 66.7%, B 57.9%, C : 34.5%, D : 7.7%.
